Was Subban even the best defenseman on his team?

No - Subban wasn't the best D-man on his team. Ryan Ellis was, followed by Josi, then Subban. Problem is, Ellis only played half the season. Subban's nomination was based solely on being near the top in points & reputation. He had a good year. But not top-3 in the league good!

To be fair with Subban, he was totally Norris worthy up until February. He was leading all Dmen or he was top 3 in goals, points, while playing with Emelin, getting crazy D-zone starts, and playing against the other team's top line most of the time. He was leading his team in points too.

Doughty was a serious candidate too but Hedman was injured at that point. People weren't talking about Josi or Jones or Carlson for the Norris back then. Josi had a pretty underwhelming season at that point. He was good, but not Norris good.

Around February, that's when people start looking at who the real candidates are for the various trophies. Subban was the #1 candidate for many people.

In the last 2 months, Subban wasn't Norris worthy, but it seems like his strong play from earlier in the season was good enough to keep him in the 3 finalists. He won't win though.

Josi finished strong in the last 2 months, playing with Ellis, and overall, he could have been considered for the Norris (I'm sure he'll get votes). But to win the Norris, people have to talk about you around December-January-February, otherwise it will most likely be too late.

I don't think he'll win it this year, but Ivan Provorov should be in consideration.

Never got top-unit PP time, still tied for league lead in goals by a defenseman. Logged huge minutes including PK, was a bright spot on one of the weakest defensive blue lines in the league, and is pretty much fantastic is all aspects.

Subban.

Not because he was the best this year (perhaps not even top 3, but easily top 10). However, it would cause Bergevin's head to explode, thus removing him from the GM seat in Montreal, so for very selfish reasons, I hope Subban wins.

(but really, Hedman deserves it)

Rielly should be nominated for the Norris because he was good on the PP and had a bad partner?

How many times have you written that that PP success isn't really a good indicator of player value because anyone can be successful on the PP?

I don't think PP success should be a prime factor, but he was the NHL's most productive Power Play producer, while putting up a decent amount of 5v5 points, and great possession stats despite playing with a total boat anchor.

I don't understand this all-or-nothing rush to evaluation. I definitely think that power-play points pad totals and that 5v5 scoring is a better evaluation tool. That doesn't mean I disregard everything else.

I actually think Carlson should at least be in the discussion.

To me Hedman is the winner but Carlson played will enough get be talked about.

Tough call for the Norris this year. Subban and Hedman played on stacked teams. Doughty is overrated.

Cody Franson or David Rundblad, and it's not even close.

I think Gormley has something to say about that.

After watching the flyers implode - I would have to say Gudas. The exceptional passes he made to ensure the Pens keeping the puck in the zone were otherworldly.

Hedman.
